When starting the 21 Day Fix Extreme program I was worried about our getaway. I was nervous about how I was going to stay on track with eating in the car and at various restaurants, but it was actually very easy. One of the things I love about this program is that there is a place for just about all of the food groups. I did splurge and have a few glasses of wine, but what is a girl to do.
Key Tips for Staying on Track While Away:
1. Plan and plan some more. The best advice I have for anyone trying to eat healthy is to make sure you plan ahead. Yes, this may take extra time on your part, cutting up fruit and veggies. I made sure to bring food that I know are my go to snacks.
- For the car I had strawberries and grapes cut up (2 containers of purple) as well as bananas and apples. I also decided the easiest on the go option for me was half a peanut butter sandwich (1 yellow and 2 tsp.).
- Once we arrived at the condo I ate a salad; which was already cut up and ready to go.
- I also made sure I brought turkey, hummus, and carrots.
2. Commit to your meal plan. This was a big one for me. There have been many times where I simply decided, I am on vacation so I can eat whatever I want (trust me that will happen on other vacations, I love letting go sometimes), but I committed to this program and I am loving it so I was not about to blow it on one weekend (I didn’t feel deprived at all).
- We went out to dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings and I ordered naked chicken tenders; I subbed in potato wedges for my yellow (yes these aren’t on the plan, but I had a yellow container left and I only ate a few). Plain and simple, but delicious.
- The following evening we had dinner planned with another family and we made spaghetti with meat sauce. I simply took a little bit of the pasta and more of the sauce (1 yellow, 1 red) I choose not to have a piece of garlic bread or a brownie. This was a decision I made before even going to dinner. I have learned I do much better when I decide ahead of time what I am going to eat and what I am not going to eat. I knew I wanted a couple glasses of wine so I skipped the dessert and bread.
3. Remember life is not all about the food. Focus on family and why you are on vacation. This is something you can use in your everyday life as well. Life is about so much more then what you are eating. With everything I went through back in the day food took over a major part of my life or lack there of.
4. There is always time to get in a 30 minute workout. We had a one bedroom condo, our girls slept on the pull out couch in the family room (couldn’t workout there) so I worked out in the bathroom. Yes, I was going to get it done no matter what, 30 minutes in my day is nothing.
I must say I am not even missing sweets. Whenever I am in the mood for something chocolate I simply have a tsp. of almond butter and it passes. Try it, it works. 🙂
